Garden Sage

(Salvia officinalis L.)

Sage is a kind of subshrub of the mint family (Lamiaceae).  Dozens of its species are currently known, used both for medical and culinary purposes. Sage grows wild almost all over the globe.  In herbal medicine it was known already in Ancient Greece. It was believed to be a plant that provides eternal youth and immortality and was called ambrosia.  The Latin name salvia means “living”, “saved”.

The used raw material is a leaf of the species Salvia officinalis L., which contains tannins, polyphenolic acids, essential oil and saponins.  In the form of infusions are used to assist in proper operation of the gastrointestinal tract.
